Cairns Customer Service Officer Amber Smith with recently employed Terry and Consultant Florensia Walker
Born with a spinal defect, 56 year old Terry had been unemployed for the last 10 years.
Now, Terry is in charge of keeping Cairns secure as the newly appointed Security Supervisor for Immediate Response Security Services
(IRSS). Terry helps with the rostering of current employees, hiring of new employees and handles any complaints that come through.
Terry’s consultant Florensia Walker was able to use her employer connections to gain Terry a group interview with the IRSS Brisbane team when they flew up north earlier this year.
Terry said Flo helped him a lot with both the security course and the interview to successfully secure the position.
“I got help with my course and licence. My schooling wasn’t crash hot so I had trouble understanding the interview questions. Flo helped read the questions to me and if I need anything or want anything I know I can talk to her.”
After previous experience as a truck driver, Terry said he was interested in becoming a security guard or a night patrol officer so he wouldn’t be sitting down for such long periods.
“I used to be a truck driver and carry weight on my shoulders. Over time it compressed my spine and my nerves were being squashed.”
Terry said his new job helps lessen the financial and emotional stress he was previously experiencing.
“It was hard just to pay the bills so the extra money helps. This job saved my marriage.”
IRSS Manager Mishal Lal is more than pleased with Terry’s performance and attitude.
“Terry has a never say never attitude, he’s a professional that goes above and beyond to fulfil his duties.”
Mishal said that because of Terry, IRSS have managed to gain more contracts.
“Terry works hard for the business and makes it better,” Mishal said.
“Because of him we’ve had more work come in. We’ve gained a new contract because our main contractor saw the progress Terry had made and entrusted more work to us because of Terry’s management skills.”
With the majority of IRSS employees based in Brisbane, Mishal said he can now rest easy knowing Terry is taking charge of everything up in Cairns.
“Terry was straight forward, genuine and spoke his mind. With us being in Brisbane and Terry up north, we knew that if there was a problem Terry would let us know. He already had those leadership skills and the ability to organise and manage people.”
Mishal said the future looked promising for Terry at IRSS.
“At the moment, the sky’s the limit. Every day Terry is proving himself, every hour he puts in to the business he’s proving himself. For the future, we’ve got a new contract and we’ll keep growing.”
