25 year old single mum Jacquelyn was struggling to get back to work while looking after her two children.
Now employed at Oasis Horticulture
in Yellow Rock for over two months, Jacqui has found a job that she not only likes, but accommodates her availability to work within school hours. Most importantly, Jacqui now has new found confidence in herself.
“It was really hard for me to find jobs,” Jacqui said.
“I’d get a phone call about my resume to get a little bit more information, but once the employer found out I was a single parent, I never got a call back.”
NSW Department of Industy's new Smart, Skilled and Hired
(SSH) program turned Jacqui’s luck around.
When Jacqui heard about the SSH program through a family friend, she jumped at the opportunity for extra assistance.
Aimed at young people who are seeking extra work, the SSH program addresses common barriers to youth unemployment including lack of experience, lack of skills or lack of childcare.
Jacqui said without the support of SSH Business Development Officer Christina Challita, she wouldn’t have been able to secure the job.
“Christina helped me fix my resume. I was struggling to find a day care and she helped me find a reliable place. She helped me get the interview with Oasis.
“She basically went from start to finish to help me, which was really good.”
With prior experience in farming and agriculture, Oasis Horticulture is a great fit for Jacqui where she picks and packs plant orders, and packages them for dispatch.
“They eased me into the work but I picked it up pretty easily. The people I work with are nice.
“It’s more get up and go, I’m not just chasing after the kids anymore.”
