Sam operating machinery at Signarama, Archerfield QLD.
24 year old Sam has now been working at Signarama for 12 months, helping to build A-frames, package signs and deliver them, as well as helping with general housekeeping.
After studying at university for four years, Sam said it was a tough two years trying to find work with his quiet nature.
“When I finished university I stopped hanging out with people. I know it’s better for me to be dealing with people but I couldn’t do it.”
Working with Metro South Health (MSH) Case Worker Satinder Kaur, Sam was offered many avenues to undertake treatment and accepted an Integrated Employment Program (IEP)* for employment assistance.
"Sam didn't have defined goals or specific areas of direction, so we worked with him to identify these and supported him in his interest in the workforce," Satinder said.
Sam was referred by Satinder to Silia, MAX Employment Consultatnt, as part of the IEP.
"As a case worker, I witnessed Sam's rapport with Silia build," said Satinder.
"Silia put all her best effort into pursuing Sam's interest and her ongoing efforts proved beneficial for Sam."
Sam said that with the help of Silia, he became more motivated.
“Silia inspired me into wanting to get into work, helped me with trying out a couple of jobs, trying to get me out of the house.”
Working every day has helped Sam create a routine, but he admits it’s not always easy.
“Even now I struggle with being motivated.”
Silia said she saw a change in Sam from when they first met three years ago.
“Sam doesn’t give himself enough credit. For a long time he wouldn’t budge, he wasn’t keen to work but we’ve worked with him to increase his confidence. I knew he could do it.”
Signarama co-owner Wendy Morgen appreciates Sam’s ability to take direction.
“If you show Sam a way to do something, he will do it that way every time.”
Sam’s quiet nature has shown to be a real asset to the Signarama team too.
“Sam doesn’t talk much, he’s not distracting to other members of the company at all; he’ll put his head down and get the job done.”
Wendy said that Sam’s work has helped create more efficiency in her business.
“Sam has lifted a lot of the workload from our sales and production teams. If customers are wanting a sign urgently, they’d be the ones to go out and deliver it. Now Sam can do that and it frees up their time and creates a better customer experience.”
“Sam’s gaining more independence, he knows the tasks he has to do every day and he gets them done without having to be asked.”
“This is a job that can lead places, and Sam can make that move too if he wants, but it’s completely up to him. The job he is doing right now is as important as any other here.”
Integrate Employment Programs (IEP) combine clinical intervention recommendations with an individual’s strengths, skills, experience and vulnerabilities to find jobs that can be safely and independently maintained.
