23 year old Administrative Officer Tyler all smiles at new job.
Severe migraines left 23 year old Tyler debilitated for two years.
“When the migraines were at their worst I was having them five days a week. I was home bound and bed bound for a lot of it.
“Physio helped me get them down to one a week, so I could go back to looking for work.”
Tyler said she found it hard to stay motivated during this time.
“I found I never had a reason to do anything. I was stuck at home all day while my housemates went to work.
“It might sound fun to do nothing, but it’s not really.”
Because of her susceptibility to migraines, Tyler had her heart set on an office job.
“Working in direct sunlight where it was very bright all day was painful because of my light sensitivity.”
“When I went to MAX Employment Goodna, I told them I was looking for an office job and that’s what they got me.”
With support from the team in Goodna, Tyler gained the confidence to apply and interview for her current role as Administrative Officer at My Community Directory in Fortitude Valley, QLD.
“They helped me send my resume, prepare for my interview and made sure I had interview clothes. They gave me lots of practice which was really good,” Tyler said.
After four weeks of work experience through the National Work Experience Program (NWEP), Tyler has been employed for close to eight weeks now.
“I love it,” she said.
“I have money now which is really nice. One of the biggest things I realised when I started working was I only owned one pair of $7 shoes, because that’s all I could afford."
Tyler said it was hard to be turned down for many of the jobs she applied for.
“It took me a long time but I got here in the end. I got knocked back for hundreds of jobs before I got this one.
“But, I knew I had to keep pushing through.”
Tyler continues to learn and grow in her new role, with a supportive manager.
“My boss is really awesome, one of his biggest priorities is checking in to see where I want to go and help me get there.”
Tyler has a lot to celebrate with her new job as well as being newly engaged!
“My partner and I are having our engagement party soon so the money from working will help pay for that.”
