L to R: WestConnex Leading Hand Dan McKelvie with former MAX job seeker Mark Harris
When Mark Harris moved from Townsville to Sydney, he had nothing. He was without a job, without a home, and without any support.
“It was horrible. I didn’t feel like I was worth anything, no one would give me the time of day, I just felt useless,” Mark said.
Mark was referred to MAX Employment Darlinghurst, and said it was here that things started to change for him.
“My group facilitator, Eleni, she did everything for me. She got me a job, she found me a unit, got me a travel card and helped me out with some work clothes as well.”
Darlinghurst Group Facilitator Eleni said Mark has turned his life around, and she couldn’t be prouder.
“When I first met Mark he was falling apart mentally. He was afraid, he had no self-confidence and he didn’t think he was worth anything.
“His life has completely changed now. We found him a job with WestConnex. He says yes to every shift he’s offered and works pretty much six days a week. He’s earning good money and he’s just a completely different person,” Eleni said.
As well as helping him land work, Eleni helped Mark get his new unit furnished, putting the call out to the Northern Beaches community for their unwanted furniture.
“I couldn’t believe the generosity of the community. Mark’s apartment was bare and so many people pitched in to help him out. It was wonderful to see,” Eleni said.
“Eleni did everything for me,” Mark said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without her. She didn’t look down on me, she didn’t judge me. She made me feel like I was worth something and gave me all the confidence.”
Mark said the support from MAX and the Sydney community has been overwhelming, and he feels happy with his life once again.
“I value what I have now, I’ve been from one extreme to the other and I really value what I have. I wouldn’t be who I am today without Eleni and her help.”
