Daniel packing timber orders at DirectLine Timbers Maroochydore, QLD.
22 year old Daniel has successfully gained permanent employment through a PaTH* internship at Maroochydore DirectLine Timbers.
After relocating and struggling to find work for over six months, Maroochydore Group Facilitator Amanda Appietto entered Daniel into Block 1 of Employability Skills Training.
“It was only about a two week turnaround. Once Daniel completed the training he was straight into the internship,” Amanda said.
She then worked with Kevin Walduck, Owner and Director of Sales & Marketing at DirectLine Timbers to broker the internship.
“The employer particularly wanted a three month internship. But the reason he wanted that was because he put together a whole performance plan for three months.”
Kevin has over thirty years’ experience in the building industry, and had plenty of experience in hiring staff, but this was the first time using an internship program such as PaTH.
“This is the first time we’ve done it this way,” he said.
“In that period of three months that we normally we give as a probationary period, we do the same things that we did with Dan. We try and train them the same way and put them through the same skills and drills.”
Although Daniel did not have any prior experience in a timber yard, Kevin was willing to take a chance on him.
“We would generally though put a person on with some prior experience or if they had a forklift ticket already,” Kevin explained.
“Whereas Dan, he didn’t have either. He was green as. He knew nothing to do with this industry. He had no knowledge of timber. By doing the internship and having that subsidy and having that assistance from the government it makes it easier to take that extra step to train people.”
Kevin created four week, eight week and twelve week milestones that Daniel had to hit. And Daniel proved he was worthy of Kevin’s challenge.
“At eight weeks I said to Amanda he was already headed to the twelve week milestones.”
After completing the internship, Kevin did not hesitate in offering Daniel permanent employment. Kevin says it’s Daniel’s attitude that drove him to be successful in such an unfamiliar role.
“I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed about Daniel is that he’s very genuine. Because he’s a genuine sort of person, he has that want and desire to help other people and to fit in and make sure he’s contributing. It’s a good trait to have; that willingness to assist and make a difference.
“I can see how he’s started to really fit in with the rest of team. He jokes with the guys now. He’s not the little meek and mild guy from when he started. He’s gained so much confidence over three months."
Kevin said the assistance provided by MAX Employment Maroochydore was crucial for the success of Daniel’s internship.
“It’s been a good partnership, the assistance has been good, and the information flow has been really good so I’m pretty happy with that. And would I go again? Yes, definitely. Tomorrow, if I needed to put another person on again in the yard I’d do the same again.”
“If I was to give any other prospective employers or any other people wanting to undertake this program, make sure that you structure it.
“I was given an opportunity to train someone the way I want them.”
Daniel says his new job not only benefits him financially, but physically as well.
“It’s been very good working here. It’s good to work outside, even though it’s pretty physical work. I skate but I don’t do weights or anything so this keeps me fit.”
According to Kevin the sky is the limit for Daniel.
“Daniel’s future is up to Daniel,” Kevin said. “He’s got a job here as long as he keeps improving and doing what he’s doing.”
