After six months book keeping at Cleveland Locksmiths
, 42 year old Carlene has unlocked her future.
A single mum for 13 years, Carlene struggled with a lack of confidence and self-doubt. Once her son started high school, she said she had more free time to pursue her career.
“I knew I had to set myself up for the future and it was time to do that,” she said.
Carlene had been employed on and off for the last four years, trying to balance working with her son’s schooling schedule, but a death in the family provided another setback.
“I had a death in the family that destroyed me. I resigned from my job, took a break for a little while and then I came back to MAX.”
Carlene says if it weren’t for the support from MAX Employment Cleveland, things might have turned out differently.
“With MAX, they know us, they know who’s suitable for what and that makes a big difference.
“You build up a rapport with your job consultant, they get to know who you are and they’re not going to put you in a situation you find difficult.”
For Carlene, that first initial push from her Placement Consultant was just what she needed.
“She knew I could do it… but I had to learn. I had to learn if I was to stay here.”
Although Carlene had not had any prior experience in finance, owner and operator of Cleveland Locksmiths Brian Terry was prepared to take the chance on Carlene.
“We interviewed a lot of people,” he said. “I’ve learned over the years that the people who want a job, they’re the ones to hire. Carlene really wanted the job.”
With years of experience in lock smithing, Brian was at a loss when it came to hiring office staff. That’s when he approached MAX for assistance.
“Lock smithing, I know, I get that. Office work I don’t know, so we relied on MAX very heavily to find someone who would be suitable.”
“They also know the people locally, so they know who may or may not fit in and that took a lot of pressure off us.”
Now, after six months in employment, Carlene says she’s happier than ever and has even got herself a car – the first time she has been behind the wheel in over five years.
“I’ve been a single mum since my son was born and just coming to work every day makes a difference in both our lives.”
