Grace has found the recipe for success in her new job packing and labelling at a bakeware wholesaler.
“The team here are amazing, they are flexible and work with me rather than expect me to change to work with them.”
A young woman living with anxiety, Grace found it hard to find suitable employment as she would easily become overwhelmed by learning new tasks, having social interactions and being in certain environments.
The MAX team work hard to align health services with national employment services to get the right fit for each job seeker. Inala Placement Consultant (PC) Julie Pham and Health Services Officer (HSO) Trang Le worked with Grace from her first appointment to determine the right job for her. The role would have clearly defined, routine tasks in a quiet and organised environment with a consistent roster.
It can be difficult to find these positions, but PC Silia Lemalu discovered an employer that could create a role perfect for someone like Grace. The director of the bakeware wholesale warehouse and HSO Trang worked together to ensure Graces’ duties were within her ability. Grace now works in a quiet corner of the warehouse and has a to-do list ready each day when she arrives.
“She just has a different way of thinking, everyone does and it’s a matter of knowing this and working with it,” Grace’s employer said.
“We’re so impressed with her attention to detail and how conscientious she is.”
As part of MAX integrated health solutions, Trang helped Grace lead the warehouse team in Disability Awareness Training, so everyone could know and understand her better.
“They have a willingness to listen and it makes me feel like a human being again. I want to be seen and treated as a person first and not my disability,” said Grace.
HSO Trang is amazed at the change in Grace, both in her confidence and the way she adapted so quickly to her new routine. When Grace attended a follow up appointment at MAX Inala, she was brimming with excitement.
“You were right when you said this role was perfect for me. Thanks for encouraging me to go to the interview when I wasn’t sure. I am confident and comfortable and everyone is so understanding.”
Grace can now be spotted easily in the warehouse by her new nails, as she is now in permanent employment, she has the money to splurge on a manicure.
